Prevent disease transmission caused by flies
We all know flies are annoying but they can also be responsible for serious disease transmission. Effective fly control in your home is crucial to limiting the bacterial and disease transmission caused by flies.
When bacteria meets food left out in the open
It is not possible to have food away in refrigerators or cupboards twenty four hours a day – especially when you want to have a nice big fruit bowl available for all the family to enjoy!
Aside from following food handling safety guidelines you need to ensure as much as possible that your food does not come into contact with dangerous bacteria.
Flies are one of the many carriers and spreaders of bacteria. Flies feed off decaying matter (including feces) and are drawn to moist places and fermenting materials. When flies feed they ‘drip’ moisture from their mouths which contains bacteria.
It is not likely that flies will feed off clean food left out in the open, but they may rest on this food, dripping moisture (containing bacteria) onto it.
This bacteria can lead to a range of problems and diseases ranging from diarrhea and dysentary to skin infections, and in some cases typhoid and cholera.
While these more serious diseases are not a major problem in a country like Australia, they are present and remain a public health threat. Of more concern are existing conditions in Australia such as dengue fever and some forms of encephalides – both of which can be transmitted by flies.
Make sure you have adequate fly control strategies around your home to prevent the spread of unwanted bacteria and harmful disease.
